Bitshares is a decentralized cryptocurrency that delivers a decentralized exchange, with the features and capabilities of a trading platform, through the use of blockchain technology.
The Bitshares decentralized exchange caters to the trading of commodities, bonds, stocks, cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies.
Bitshares executes trades in seconds as is the case with centralized website platforms, while preventing high-frequency trading, front-running or hidden orders, ensuring that all traders are on a level playing field.
The Bitshares platform enables users to convert their cryptocurrencies into SmartCoins. SmartCoins are pegged to more traditional assets such as the U.S Dollar, i.e. BitUSD.
SmartCoins always have 100% or more of their value backed by the BitShares core currency, BTS, to which they can be converted at any time.
Bitshares was created in 2014 by Dan Larimer, who is also co-founder of Cryptonomex, EOS, and Steemit. The total number of BitShares tokens is capped at 3.601 billion.
A delegated proof-of-stake (“DPOS”) consensus is used that leverages the power of stakeholder approval voting to resolve consensus issues democratically. Fee schedules, block intervals, and transaction size can be adjusted via elected delegates.
The DPOS’s deterministic selection of block producers allows transactions to be confirmed in an average of 1 second.
On the BitShares network, witnesses are responsible for the validating of transactions. Witnesses are elected by stakeholders in a process called approval voting. Each account is allowed 1 vote per share per witness.
The top N witness by total approval is selected. The number N of witnesses is defined such that at least 50% of voting stakeholders believe there is sufficient decentralization.
Witnesses are paid for each block they produce, with the pay rate set by the stakeholders via their elected delegates. The slate of active witnesses is updated once every maintenance interval (1 day) when votes are tallied. Witnesses are then shuffled and given a turn to produce a block at a fixed scheduled of one block every 2 seconds.
Witness participation rates are maintained to allow investors and the network to monitor support.
Some distinct differences and characteristics of Bitshares include:
- Trading SmartCoins on the Bitshares exchange enables the converting of BTS to SmartCoins, such as BitUSD, without having to leave the Bitshares network, providing instantaneous, anonymous trading with lower fees.
- All SmartCoins on the Bitshares exchange is pegged to real-life assets.
- Bitshares blockchain and protocols are capable of delivering up to 100,000 transactions per second.
