Oil News: Saudi Barrels Cap Crude as Diesel Tightness Holds the Floor

By
James Hyerczyk

Key Points:

  • Saudi workarounds pulled crude lower, but record diesel prices keep fuel markets tight and the oil outlook supported.
  • WTI and Brent retreat after a U.S. inventory build, but Saudi export disruptions keep supply risk elevated
  • European gasoil hit a record high as U.S. diesel held above $6, keeping the physical product market tight.

Crude is selling Wednesday and the physical market is not confirming it. Saudi Arabia found a way to move barrels around the pipeline damage and that took the urgency out of Tuesday’s $3 rally. The fuel side of the energy trade has not backed off. The part of the market where consumers actually feel the price stayed at record levels while crude dropped more than $2 in a morning. Sellers got a headline and an inventory build. They did not get the product market to agree with them.
