OSLO (Reuters) – Energy firm Equinor will supply Norwegian gas to Denmark’s Orsted via the newly opened Baltic Pipe equivalent to about a quarter of expected total Danish gas consumption, Orsted said on Thursday.

The agreement signed runs for the period from Jan. 1, 2023 to April 1, 2024 and would supply some 8 terawatt-hours of gas, it said.

“With this agreement, we’ll have more than enough gas to meet the gas demand of our customers for the coming and next winter, enabling us to stock up our Danish gas storage facilities over the summer,” Orsted said in a statement.

Orsted supplies gas to large industrial users in Denmark and Sweden.

European countries have been scrambling to secure alternative supplies of gas. Norway is now Europe’s largest gas supplier following a decline in flows from Russia, with Equinor Norway’s largest gas producer.
