Colombia is the fourth biggest economy in Latin America. In recent years, the country has been growing rapidly, mostly due to a rise in exports of commodities such as oil, coal and coffee. The biggest and the fastest growing sector of Colombian economy is services (53 percent of GDP) including: financing, insurance, real estate and business services; community, social and personal services; trade, repairs, restaurants and hotels and transport, warehousing and communication. Manufacturing, mining and quarrying create 20 percent of the wealth. Other sectors include: government (10 percent), agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing (6.3 percent); construction (6 percent) and electricity, gas and water distribution (4 percent).

Latest Updates

Colombia's economy expanded by 0.8% in the first quarter of 2025, up from 0.6% in the previous quarter and ahead of expectations of 0.7%, maintaining a solid pace of growth. This improvement was supported by a more accommodative monetary policy, since the end of 2023, the central bank has cut interest rates by four percentage points, bringing the benchmark rate to 9.25%. At its April meeting, the monetary authority struck a more cautious tone, citing global uncertainty and the country’s high fiscal deficit as reasons for prudence. Ongoing trade tensions between the US and China continue to add uncertainty to the external environment, especially considering that the US accounts for a large share of Colombia’s exports.
