AUD/USD holds its uptrend while NZD/USD stays weak. USD/JPY threatens major support below its 200-day EMA as traders look ahead to US CPI.

The first currency pair I’m watching is the Australian dollar. On the hourly chart, it’s just been in a nice uptrending channel for a while. We are getting a little stretched, but what I like about this chart is that there does seem to be a cluster of noise just below.

So somewhere around the 0.72 level, I’ll be looking to see if we get a pullback and a bounce. That might be worth having to go to the upside. If we break down below there, then I’d probably just stay away.

As we roll into Asia, we’ll get a little bit better read on this. Remember, it’s Labor Day in the United States, so not a lot going on over the next several hours. So I would venture to say experiences taught me that unless something specific happens out there. The next few candlesticks might be like watching paint dry.

NZD/USD Technical Analysis

The New Zealand dollar is in a different world at the moment. It seems a little weaker. The last RBNZ meeting was a little bit more cautious than I think people realized that it would be.

A breakdown below 0.5860 has me shorting the Kiwi. Now, observant traders might look at that and go, why don’t I just buy the Australian dollar against the New Zealand dollar? And I would say that’s triangulation, and that is a possibility as well.

But if the US dollar is to strengthen, the Kiwi has already shown itself to be very weak to begin with, so I don’t have an issue shorting this currency.

Conversely, if we were to break above the 0.5920 level, I don’t have an issue going long. Now, I wouldn’t, based on the recent action, expect as much momentum here. There are other currencies that have done better against the dollar.

USD/JPY Technical Analysis

Speaking of which, let’s take a look at the US dollar against the Japanese yen. This thing has fallen to fresh new lows. It is threatening a major support level and could fairly soon disrupt the entire trend.

Now I see that we’re below the 200-day EMA. I think of that more as a suggestion than a hard rule but breaking down below this level does fire off a warning shot. Now again, I’ve been long of this pair going back several months.

So, just the swap alone has been pretty good for me. I think in the next 24 hours, though, we may have to call it a finished move.

Now, we do have a couple of things that are coming up that could have a major influence, not the least of which would be CPI coming out of the United States. If that reads hot, then we’re back to the whole United States is going to have to tighten, and we may see a bounce.

Mean, this is basically where it has to happen. If it doesn’t happen here, then fine, the trend’s over. We move on. We start looking at other things like maybe Dollar/Swiss or Aussie/Swiss or whatever. There is a whole universe of currencies out there to trade.

This has been a fantastic run, but it looks like somebody’s out there trying to save the Bank of Japan. If the market were to make a fresh new high from here, then that would be ugly.
