The EUR/JPY dipped 19 points to trade at 130.19 as the euro eased and the Japanese yen continued to be supported by safe havens as US traders are on holiday. The Nikkei stock average’s pullback following a five-session ascent, as well as the euro’s rebound versus the dollar after recent falls on expectations that the European Central Bank will loosen its monetary policy further in December, traders said.
“The Tokyo market was overall directionless, dominated by position-adjustment transactions ahead of the U.S. market closure,” an official at a foreign exchange brokerage house said.
“The wait-and-see mood is expected to continue until next week’s two big economic events, which are the ECB’s policy-setting meeting and the release of U.S. jobs data,” an official at a foreign-affiliated securities firm said.
The European Central Bank is quite clear about its stance on monetary policy. In a recent meeting in Frankfurt, ECB president Mario Draghi said explicitly, “We will do what we must to raise inflation as quickly as possible. That is what our price stability mandate requires of us.”
