The Week Ahead: Fed, AI Earnings and PCE Data Test Stock Market Strength

By:

Nasdaq 100 Index, S&P 500 Index, Dow Jones Analysis

Key Points:

  • AI earnings from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon will test confidence in data-center spending and capital returns.
  • Wednesday’s Fed decision and Warsh press conference may reset December rate-hike expectations.
  • Core PCE, GDP, labor data and key index support levels are the next triggers for stock traders.

Market Overview

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,215.16, up 0.41% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 25,955.34, down 0.71%. The S&P 500 Index finished at 7,623.68, down 0.47%.

Federal Reserve policy remains a major issue. The Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023 to address above-target inflation. FedWatch showed an 88% probability of unchanged rates at Wednesday’s meeting, while futures pointed to roughly an 80% probability of a December hike.

Technology shares came under pressure after reports from Meta and Lam Research disappointed investors. Third-quarter S&P 500 earnings are on pace to rise more than 32% from a year ago, while hyperscaler capital spending is expected to total around $800 billion this year.

The Fed decision, Core PCE, GDP, employment data and earnings from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Intel, Sandisk, Caterpillar, Eli Lilly, Exxon and Chevron are the week’s main catalysts.

Outlook

The Fed decision, Core PCE, GDP, employment data and earnings from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Intel, Sandisk, Caterpillar, Eli Lilly, Exxon and Chevron are the main catalysts.

Traders will monitor whether earnings and company guidance support confidence in AI spending. Holding above the listed support areas would support the long-term uptrend, while weak earnings, higher inflation readings or Fed comments on December could place those levels under pressure.
