The Week Ahead: Fed Speakers, Consumer Sentiment and Earnings Set Stock Market Tone

Key Points:

  • Fed speakers take center stage after the September rate hike as traders assess the interest-rate path into year-end.
  • Consumer sentiment, durable goods, housing data, Darden and Costco headline the week’s scheduled catalysts for traders.
  • The Dow and S&P 500 fell last week, but major indices remain above rising 52-week SMAs as support comes into focus.

Market Overview

U.S. equities finished mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,682.64, down 1.69% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite finished at 26,522.55, up 0.72%, while the S&P 500 settled at 7,650.50, down 0.08%.

The Federal Reserve raised the fed funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, its first rate increase in three years. Policymakers raised inflation forecasts and penciled in another increase before year-end, while officials remained divided over 2027. Equities initially declined and bond yields rose after the decision before stocks rebounded.

Second-quarter S&P 500 profits increased 50% from a year earlier, and analysts project 27% growth for the third quarter. Earnings are also expected near 20% for the S&P 500 and U.S. mid-cap stocks over the quarters ahead. Resilient consumer spending and broad-based earnings growth could support a wider range of sectors and companies.

The Federal Reserve speaking schedule is the week’s primary market catalyst after the September rate increase.

Outlook

Friday’s revised consumer-sentiment and inflation-expectations data are the week’s main economic event. Flash PMIs, durable-goods orders, jobless claims, housing data, Darden and Costco will provide the other scheduled catalysts.

Traders will monitor the Fed speakers for the policy path after the September hike and Friday’s consumer-sentiment data for inflation concerns. Holding the listed weekly support levels would maintain the long-term uptrend, while a break below them would put the indices under pressure.
