In France, the unemployment rate measures the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of the labour force.

Latest Updates

The unemployment rate in France inched up to 7.4 percent in the second quarter of 2022 from 7.3% in the previous quarter, and above market forecasts of 7.3%. The number of unemployed people increased by 29,000 to 2.3 million. At the same time, the unemployment rate for people aged 15-24 climbed 1.3 points to 17.8 percent, but remained clearly below its pre-crisis level (by 3.7 points). However, the unemployment rate was virtually stable for those aged 25 to 49 (+0.1 points) at 6.7% and decreased for those aged 50 or more to 5.2% (–0.3 points). The employment rate was unchanged at 68.0 percent, the fresh peak since INSEE measures it according to ILO’s definition. Meanwhile, the activity rate rose by 0.1 points to 73.5 percent from 73.4 percent and was exceeded its highest-ever level of the previous quarter.
