In Italy, the Manufacturing Confidence Index covers 4,000 Italian companies. The questionnaire focuses on the current trend of order books, production and inventories, short-term forecasts on order books, production, prices and the general economic situation. The business confidence index is adjusted for seasonal effects and fixed to a base year of 2005. The value 100 indicates no evolution in business sentiment, a value over 100 shows increasing confidence and a value under 100 indicates low expectations.

The manufacturing confidence index in Italy rose to 86.5 in May 2025 from an upwardly revised 85.8 in the previous month, exceeding market expectations of 86.2. This marked the highest reading since February, as sentiment improved across several key indicators. Expectations for production (-1.8 vs -2.3 in April), order books (-1.5 vs -1.6), the economic situation (-21 vs -27.4), and cash availability (-7.6 vs -8.8) over the next three months became less pessimistic. Meanwhile, sentiment regarding the three-month employment outlook continued to deteriorate (-1.2 vs -0.6).
