Retail sales in Malaysia increased by 6.6% year-on-year in March 2025, following a downwardly revised 5.7% rise in the previous month. The acceleration was driven by faster rises in sales at non-specialised stores (6.5% vs 5.9% in February), household equipment (5.8% vs 4.6%), food, beverages and tobacco (8.1% vs 6.4%), automotive fuel (7.9% vs 6.2%), other goods (7.3% vs 5.5%), and trade via stalls and markets (10.0% vs 7.6%). For the first quarter of 2025, retail sales climbed by 5.2% year-on-year. On a monthly basis, retail sales rose by 2.9%, rebounding from an upwardly revised 1.6% gain in the prior period. Meanwhile, wholesale trade growth eased slightly to 5.7% from 5.8%, while vehicle trade rose 2.3%, after rising 1.5% in February.
