Romania’s trade deficit narrowed to EUR 2.73 billion in May 2025 from EUR 2.98 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, driven by exports outpacing imports. Exports climbed 10.6% year-on-year to EUR 8 billion, supported by an 11.6% gain in shipments to EU countries and a 7.8% increase in sales to non-EU markets. Meanwhile, imports grew by 5% from a year earlier to EUR 10.73 billion, mainly reflecting a 9.8% increase in purchases from non-EU countries and a 3.4% rise in purchases from EU markets. In the first five months of the year, the trade deficit widened to EUR 14.32 billion from EUR 12.29 billion in the same period last year, as exports rose 2.5%, while imports increased more notably by 5.8%.
