The AUD/USD is trading at 1.0360 tumbling after just a few days ago breaking above the 1.05 level. AUD markets were closed yesterday for Boxing Day. The Aussie hit a three-week low against the US dollar as nervous traders move into the safe haven of the greenback ahead of a possible end to the US budget talks.
The focus is firmly on the fiscal cliff as President Barack Obama and lawmakers readied to return to budget negotiations. The president was set to depart for Washington from Hawaii, with his family remaining behind to continue a Christmas-holiday break, the White House said. Both Obama and Congress were expected to arrive in Washington on Thursday.
The Case-Shiller home-price index had prices falling 0.1% in October. For September, Case-Shiller’s 20-city composite index showed a 0.3% increase in prices. Prices rose 3% over the prior 12 months.
