The USD/CAD is trading at 0.9850 slightly down as the US dollar is losing some momentum after positive eco data showing a jump in housing starts and a strong jobs report helped traders look for more risk. Crude oil continues to climb helping to support the CAD. The CAD saw a huge drop in Foreign Security Purchases this morning which surprised markets as Canada has a strong AAA rating one of the few countries that is not on a negative watch list at present. The data was important as “foreign investment flows into Canada have been an important support for the Canadian dollar over the last year and are expected to continue.
In the U.S., the Commerce Department said housing starts came in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 954,000 during December. It was the fastest pace since the summer of 2008. And the Labor Department reported that the number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell to a five-year low last week.
