Austria's economy is dependent on foreign trade and closely linked to the economies of other EU countries, particularly Germany. The major export commodity in Austria is the automobile and its components, machinery and paper products. Austria imports mainly machinery and equipment, motor vehicles, chemicals, metal goods, oil and oil products and foodstuffs.
Latest Updates
Austria’s trade balance posted a deficit of EUR 0.23 billion in September 2025, shifting from a surplus of EUR 0.25 billion a year earlier. This marked the seventh consecutive month of trade deficit, as import growth outpaced exports. Imports expanded 6.5% year-on-year to EUR 16.79 billion, with higher purchases from both EU countries (+5.9%) and non-EU countries (+7.7%). Meanwhile, exports increased 3.2% year-on-year to EUR 16.56 billion, supported by shipments to both EU countries (+4.5%) and non-EU destinations (+0.4%). For January-September 2025 overall, international trade fell 2.2% compared with the same period last year. "This was mainly due to the increase in imports from Switzerland, which rose by almost two-thirds compared with the same period last year. The decline in exports is largely attributable to a 22.2% drop in shipments to the United States, Austria’s second-largest export partner after Germany," said Statistics Austria Director Manuela Lenk
