Belgium’s trade surplus narrowed sharply to EUR 1,786 million in May 2025 from EUR 2,707.1 million in the corresponding month of the previous year, as exports dropped more than imports. Exports declined by 6.2% year-on-year to EUR 40,259 million, weighed down by lower outbound shipments to non-EU (-11.5%) and EU countries (-3.6%). Meanwhile, imports fell at a softer 4.3% to EUR 38,473 million, with reduced purchases from both non-EU (-5.4%) and EU countries (-3.6%). Considering the January to May period, the country recorded a surplus of EUR 10,442.4 million, expanding from EUR 9,150.4 million in the same period last year.
