The Sri Lanka Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index measures the performance of the manufacturing sector and is derived from a survey of 150 industrial companies. The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index is based on five individual indexes with the following weights: New Orders, Output, Employment, Suppliers’ Delivery Times and Stock of Items Purchased, with the Delivery Times index inverted so that it moves in a comparable direction. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month; below 50 represents a contraction; while 50 indicates no change.
Latest Updates
Sri Lanka's manufacturing PMI dropped sharply to 40.1 in April 2025 from 63.9 in March, the lowest in two years and consistent with seasonal contraction. The fall was primarily driven by a steep decline in production (30 vs 70.2 in March) due to fewer working days. New orders (36.5 vs 71.2) also contracted significantly, reflecting the waning festive season demand, particularly in the food and beverage sector. In line with the declines in production and new orders, the stock of purchases also fell (41 vs 62), and employment (44.9 vs 51.9) declined as manufacturers scaled back temporary staff following the end of seasonal production. Meanwhile, suppliers’ delivery time (57 vs 56.3) lengthened further, mainly due to festive season-related supply chain disruptions.
