The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index measures the performance of the manufacturing sector and is derived from a survey of 400 manufacturing companies. The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index is based on five individual indexes with the following weights: New Orders (30 percent), Output (25 percent), Employment (20 percent), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15 percent) and Stock of Items Purchased (10 percent), with the Delivery Times index inverted so that it moves in a comparable direction. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month; below 50 represents a contraction; while 50 indicates no change.
Latest Updates
The S&P Global Indonesia Manufacturing PMI stood at 49.2 in October 2024, holding steady for the second straight month while marking the fourth month of decline in factory activity. Output and new orders fell slightly, extending the current period of drop in each case to four months amid subdued market conditions. Meantime, geopolitical uncertainty led to an eighth monthly fall in foreign sales. Employment shrank for the third time in the past four months. Backlogs of work fell for a fifth month, with the fall the fastest since January 2021. Buying levels continued to fall, down for the fourth month. Vendor performance improved for the first time since May. On prices, input cost rose the least since August 2023, but its inflation rate remained marked. This caused some firms to raise their charges, albeit only marginally and at a below-average pace. Finally, confidence was down noticeably since September, falling to a four-month low and further below its historical trend level.
