In Sweden, because new orders heavily affect business confidence they are a leading indicator for growth in gross domestic product. The statistics is sample- and register-based and aims to measure short-term changes in new orders and turnover in industry on a monthly basis, in total and by industry, as well as domestic and export market. The survey is coordinated with other economy-based surveys.

Total orders received by Swedish industry dropped by 2.4% year-on-year in May 2025, slipping from an upwardly revised 7.4% rise in the previous month. This marked the first month of decline since October last year, as both foreign orders (-0.5% vs 8.8% in April) and domestic demand (-5.7% vs 5.4%) decreased. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, new orders fell by 1.4% in May, slowing from a 6.5% loss in the preceding period.
