The Markit/BME Germany Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index measures the performance of the manufacturing sector and is derived from a survey of 500 industrial companies. The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index is based on five individual indexes with the following weights: New Orders (30 percent), Output (25 percent), Employment (20 percent), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15 percent) and Stock of Items Purchased (10 percent), with the Delivery Times index inverted so that it moves in a comparable direction. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month; below 50 represents a contraction; while 50 indicates no change.
Latest Updates
The HCOB Germany Manufacturing PMI fell to 40.6 in September of 2024 from 42.4 in the previous month, the lowest in one year, revised higher than the preliminary estimate of 40.3 but still sharply below the initial expectations of 42.3. The result underscored the steepening of the contractionary momentum for German manufacturing in the year, a large contributor to the lack of traction in the Eurozone’s output. New orders declined sharply from the prior month, with surveyees citing market uncertainty, hesitance to invest, destocking for customers, and overall weakness in the heavyweight auto manufacturing sector. Consequently, output fell despite the fresh drawdown in work backlogs. The lower demand for capacity drove purchasing activity to continue falling and employment levels to sink at the fastest pace in four years. In the meantime, lower input demand drove both purchasing prices and output charges to fall.
