In Brazil, the Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index measures the performance of the manufacturing sector and is derived from a survey of 400 industrial companies. The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index is based on five individual indexes with the following weights: New Orders (30 percent), Output (25 percent), Employment (20 percent), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15 percent) and Stock of Items Purchased (10 percent), with the Delivery Times index inverted so that it moves in a comparable direction. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month; below 50 represents a contraction; while 50 indicates no change.
Latest Updates
The S&P Global Brazil Manufacturing PMI increased to 55.9 in April of 2024, indicating a strong expansion for the fourth consecutive month, a marked improvement from March's 53.6 level, and marking the highest level since July 2021. Strong demand boosted new business, leading to increased production and job creation, alongside robust purchasing of inputs. Despite supply chain pressures and rising inflation, both input costs and output charges surged. New orders, especially from exports, rose sharply, driving significant production growth. Inflationary pressures intensified, with output charge inflation at a 20-month high. Brazilian manufacturers expanded purchasing to prevent input shortages, despite challenges like increased costs and delayed vendor performance. Employment growth accelerated, reflecting improved business confidence amid interest rate cuts and product diversification efforts, contributing to heightened optimism.
