NASA on NFTs: “NASA Content May Not Be Used for Any Purpose”

The craze behind NFTs has been reaching all parts of the globe. From companies to celebrities to artists everyone is involved in them.

Thus people assumed that owing to the trending hype NASA might too sooner or later jump into the NFT market. But after this announcement, it is safe to say that it won’t be happening anytime soon.

NASA Says NO to NFTs

The biggest space agency in the world released guidelines yesterday instructing in what capacity and manner can a non-NASA employee use their proprietary branding. The guidelines read:

“NASA Insignia, Logotype and Seal should not be used as branding devices, or used in or for advertising, trade dress, promotions, or similar marketing purposes, on third-party websites or communications material.“

Furthermore, under the explicitly mentioned “Restrictions” section NASA explained that being a government entity, the space agency does not license the use of their material unless it is reproduced after it has been made available to the public.

Even then under certain conditions, no person can claim ownership of such public information:

“Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are, in essence, digital tokens owned by someone as a “one of a kind” digital asset.  NASA does not wish for its images to be used for these purposes.”

However, the space agency does not restrict the use of their material for educational and informational purposes. Schools, news outlets, and other textbooks are free to use NASA’s content without the need for an explicit permission.

The Growth of NFTs

NFTs brought a whole new era of DeFi and crypto to the world when they arrived and it did not take long for it to become the next big thing. The lure of exclusive ownership of a one-of-a-kind digital object worked like a charm and NFTs blew up.

Today the NFTs market sums up to a whopping $17 billion with the craze ever spreading.

Just recently, social media giant Twitter introduced NFT profile pictures, and following its footsteps, Reddit too might be jumping into the trend. Just this week a leaked image indicated NFT avatars could be coming to the platform soon.
