Key Insights:

  • Coinbase is taking NFTs mainstream with a Bored Ape Yacht Club film trilogy titled the Degen Trilogy.
  • The first release of the trilogy will be aired in June, with Coinbase calling on the NFT community to contribute to the plot.
  • Upon release, users will need to create a Coinbase wallet to view the trilogy, which may coincide with the launch of CoinbaseNFT.

In recent months, the film industry has forged stronger ties with NFTs. Several platforms now exist that use NFTs to fund movies. Hollywood greats have also entered the lucrative world of NFTs.

In January, Quentin Tarantino took Pulp Fiction NFT, with the launch of ETH-based TARANTINO NFTs, a set of 7 NFTs that included never-seen-before footage from the film.

Coinbase aims to reengineer the link by taking Bored Ape Yacht Club to the movies.

Coinbase Announces Bored Ape Film Trilogy Titled ‘The Degen Trilogy’

This week, Coinbase has announced a new film project.

Taking to Twitter, Coinbase tweeted,

“We’re creating an interactive three-part film featuring @BoredApeYC & @apecoin communities.”

Coinbase invited the NFT community to take part in creating the trilogy.

Elaborating further on Twitter, Coinbase tweeted,

“Here’s how you can help us make this movie:

  • Get @CoinbaseWallet
  • Submit your Bored Ape
  • Hide an easter egg.”

Coinbase has invited the owners of Bored Ape NFTs to audition their apes for the trilogy.

According to the news wires, Coinbase entertainment and culture marketing director William Swann said,

“Mutant Apes, another Yuga Labs-owned project, will be receiving the same treatment, along with other popular projects yet to be named.”

For the NFT space, the timing of the trilogy coincides with the anticipated launch of CoinbaseNFT. In March, Coinbase announced the imminent launch of CoinbaseNFT, a peer-to-peer marketplace allowing users to discover, mint, purchase, and showcase NFTs.

While Coinbase may be among the first to take NFTs to the movies, the film industry has partnered with NFTs for some time.

The Film Industry Targets NFTs to Revolutionize the Industry

It was a busy first quarter for the movie industry as filmmakers turned to NFTs for fundraising.

In January, FF3, a new platform, launched to allow the film industry to fund their moves through NFT sales. Investors can get a share of film revenues in addition to receiving collectible NFTs that could fetch a tidy sum in the NFT marketplace.

Independent film, more commonly known as Indie Film, also hit the news. FX Empire reported Indie films turning to NFTs and DAOs as a major funding source. In February, film director Miguel Faus announced a crowdfunding for ‘Calladita’, with NFTs and other rewards offered to those who contributed.

With Coinbase and its film production capabilities, the platform may be planning to join the film industry revolution.
