Warner Music Group and Splinterlands Plan Play-to-Earn Games

It’s been a busy start to the year for Warner Music Group (WMG). Last month, we reported news of WMG purchasing LAND in the Sandbox (SAND). Amidst a flurry of activity across the NFT marketplace and the Metaverse, WMG was back in the news this week.

Warner Music Group Expands Virtual Move with Splinterlands

This week, Warner Music Group and Splinterlands have joined forces to deliver play-to-earn games. WMG announced the partnership with Splinterlands on Wednesday. Splinterlands is the company behind the popular blockchain-based P2E collectible card game.

According to the announcement, the two companies will give chosen “WMG artists opportunities to create and develop unique, play-to-earn (P2E), arcade-style blockchain games”.

In collaboration with Splinterlands, WMG aims to create new revenue streams for WMG artists. Additionally, WMG is looking to drive fan participation. By tapping into arcade-style gaming, the partnership “will produce mobile-friendly, accessible games that can facilitate wider adoption and foster community building more easily than traditional play-to-earn games.

Play-to-earn games give players rewards that include NFTs. The attraction for players is that they “can trade, sell, or lease anything they earn in-game.

The Warner Music Group’s move into blockchain gaming is a strategic one. According to DappRadar, blockchain games currently make up half of the entire blockchain industry’s usage.

In January 2022, games absorbed 52% of blockchain users. Splinterlands remained the most played Dapp game in the industry. The play-to-earn trading card game drew over 305,000 unique active wallets (UAW), increasing the number of connected wallets in 2021 by 4.5%.

By partnering with a leader Dapp game space, WMG will also have access to 1.8m registered Splinterlands users. Splinterlands Co-Founder and CEO said: “Warner Music Group is a leader in the music industry. They are innovating the music industry to meet the standards set by Web 3.0 community members.

Warner Music Group Buys LAND in the Sandbox

In January, WMG purchased a beachfront property in the Metaverse. WMG plans to create a musical theme park and concert venue that would allow WMG artists and fans to engage. Sandbox aims to allow music fans to buy LAND adjacent to the beachfront property.

The partnership with Splinterlands expands the music industry’s presence in virtuality.
