Retail sales in Brazil declined 0.4% month-on-month in April 2025, the biggest decline since June 2024, after a 0.8% increase in the previous month and compared to expectations of a 0.8% fall. Declines were seen in sales of fuels and lubricants (–1.7%), office, computer and communication equipment and supplies (–1.3%), hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (–0.8%) and furniture and household appliances (–0.3%). On the other hand, increases were recorded in sales for books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (+1.6%), other personal and household goods (+1.0%), textiles, clothing and footwear (+0.6%) and pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (+0.2%). Compared to the previous year, retail sales rose 4.8%, reversing the 1.0% loss in March and exceeding market expectations of 3.4% growth.
