In Japan, industrial production measures the output of businesses integrated in industrial sector of the economy such as manufacturing, mining, and utilities.

Latest Updates

Japan’s industrial production fell 1.6% month-over-month in July 2025, reversing a 2.1% gain in June and surpassing market expectations of a 1.0% decline, flash data showed. It was the sharpest drop since November 2024, weighed by U.S. trade uncertainty, soft demand, and ongoing pressure on key industries such as autos and steel. Output fell sharply in motor vehicles (-6.7% vs 0.5% in June), production machinery (-6.2% vs 0.5%), and general-purpose and business-oriented machinery (-4.5% vs 1.6%). On a yearly basis, output declined 0.9%, swinging from a 4.4% surge in June, the strongest annual growth since September 2022.
