Headway is a financial derivatives broker founded in 2022 and headquartered in South Africa. It is authorized by the FSCA and offers more than 400 tradable assets across currency pairs, commodities, stocks, indices, cryptocurrencies, and synthetics.
The broker supports MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms, which accommodate most trading styles, including automated trading via EAs. Algorithmic traders can also use a Cent account for testing their strategies. And for managing your account on the go, Headway has developed a sophisticated mobile app.
Headway’s prices vary. While I recorded low costs on forex pairs and share CFDs via the Standard account, the prices on gold, crude oil, and indices exceeded the industry benchmark. The costs on the Pro account were higher than average for almost all instruments I tested.
The broker stands out for its unlimited leverage and low spread on BTCUSD on the Standard account. If you seek learning, Headway offers a great collection of educational articles and videos.

When reviewing a broker, we assess whether it suits different trading strategies and trader profiles. To achieve this, we evaluate the availability of the necessary features and tools. Here’s our verdict about Headway:
Headway’s client area connects signal providers and signal followers. You can screen the available strategies from there, assess their performance, and subscribe to the one you like most. Alternatively, if you are a signal provider, you can list your own strategy and set a subscription fee.
A $10 minimum deposit, popular MT4 and MT5 platforms, robust market research, and comprehensive education make Headway a decent option for casual traders and beginners. However, its prices on some instruments exceed the industry average.
Day traders will likely appreciate the availability of MT4 and MT5, along with the solid trading conditions for FX pairs, share CFDs, and Bitcoin on the Standard account. The platforms are stable, familiar, and support one-click trading, which is helpful in fast-moving sessions. However, from my experience, MetaTrader is not the best choice for intensive day trading. The charts feel a bit dated and can become cluttered, which makes detailed, precision-based technical analysis less comfortable.
While I recorded very low overnight fees on Apple and BTCUSD, swaps on the DOW 30 exceeded the benchmark significantly. So be aware of which instruments you plan to hold overnight. The lack of ETFs, which many swing traders prefer, is another drawback.
MT4 and MT5 offer essential scalping tools, including limit and stop orders, one-click trading, and Depth of Market (DoM) trading. Moreover, I recorded an average execution ping with Headway of around 60 milliseconds, which is aligned with the industry average. However, MetaTrader’s rugged charts and the lack of VPS prevented the broker from scoring higher.
Even though Headway publishes daily market briefs that are of very high quality, I discovered that the broker does not offer any third-party content. There are no actionable trading signals or market sentiment gauges.
Automated trading is available via MT4 and MT5’s Expert Advisors (EAs). MetaTrader also features built-in strategy testers that let you hone the parameters of your trading systems. Headway also offers a Cent account, which is a great fit for algo testing. The only drawback is the lack of Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting.
Headway has an innovative approach to investing through NOVA, a proprietary service that uses blockchain technology for investing in tokenized property. You can start with as little as $25 and generate revenue from property value appreciation and rent. However, the broker does not offer any real stocks for value investing and portfolio building.
Headway stands out for its unlimited retail leverage. You can utilize it if you have already traded 5 standard lots with the broker.
I opened Standard and Pro accounts with Jarocel Pty Ltd and tested the desktop and mobile app versions of the MetaTrader 5 platform. Some features and services may vary by location.

Headway is licensed and regulated in South Africa by the FSCS. Under South African regulatory requirements, the broker must keep client funds in segregated accounts and provide negative balance protection. However, I couldn’t confirm the presence of segregated funds in the broker’s legal docs, which I consider a transparency issue. Still, Headway’s legal documents are readily available and easy to comprehend.
| Entity Features | Jarocel Pty Ltd |
| Country/Region | South Africa/East London |

| Segregated Funds | Yes |
| Negative Balance Protection | Yes |
| Compensation Scheme | No |

When reviewing a broker, we examine how each of its entities is regulated and assess how effectively they protect clients. We use a three-tier system to rank regulatory bodies, with Tier-1 being the most trusted and offering the highest level of protection.
This is what I discovered about Headway:
I reviewed the broker’s client agreement and risk disclosure to examine how Headway protects its clients. These documents can be accessed from the ‘About Us’ tab on the Headway website, under the ‘Legal Documents’ section.
Here is what I found about Jarocel (Pty) Ltd:
✅ Segregated Accounts – Client funds are kept separate from the company’s own capital.
✅ Negative Balance Protection – Your losses cannot exceed your invested capital.
❌ Compensation Scheme – In the unlikely event of insolvency, you will not be entitled to insurance.
To learn more about the most important safety mechanisms and how they apply to you, check our dedicated guide on client protections.
We also assess a broker’s stability and transparency. This includes how long the company has been in business, its size, and how openly it shares information about its business and services.
I reviewed Headway’s website and social media channels and discovered that the broker is a relative newcomer to the trading scene, having been established in 2022. According to the broker’s LinkedIn page, it employs about 40 professionals, which is pretty standard for the industry.
I also checked Headway’s client agreement and risk disclosure. For the most part, I found that Headway maintains clear and transparent operations. Its legal documents are readily available, concise, and cover all relevant information about the company’s standard practices, as well as clients’ rights, obligations, and protections. However, I identified one transparency issue.
Typically, brokers state that a client’s funds are held in separate bank accounts from those used for the company’s corporate capital, which is done in order to shield the client from the company’s credit liabilities. However, I couldn’t find any mention of fund segregation in Headway’s documents.
Despite this major omission, I should underline that the broker does indeed keep its clients’ funds separate. I know this because Headway would not have obtained a license from the FSCA otherwise.
The other transparency issue I identified was the lack of a live spreads feed on the website, which would allow casual visitors to evaluate a broker’s fee competitiveness and transparency.
Instead of a live spreads feed, Headway displays the ‘Minimal spread’ rates for each instrument, which gives you a crude and less precise understanding of the pricing mechanism.
Despite some transparency issues, I concluded that Headway is reasonably safe to trade with due to the following factors:
I found that Headway’s Standard account offers super-competitive conditions for trading forex, stocks, and Bitcoin. However, the broker’s commodity and index spreads were considerably higher than the benchmark. The Pro account is more cost-effective, but still lags behind other brokers’ raw-spread accounts. Still, Headway balances this with low-to-average swap fees and no inactivity fee. Deposits and withdrawals are also free.
I tested Headway’s spreads on the Standard and Pro accounts on 29 January 2025 during the London and New York opens. I used live accounts in MetaTrader 5 on the desktop. Here are my results:
| Account Type | Standard | Pro | ||||
| Instrument | Live Spread AM | Live Spread PM | Industry Average* | Live Spread AM | Live Spread PM | Industry Average* |
| EURUSD | 1.1 pips | 0.8 pips | 1.19 pips | 0.7 pips | 0.9 pips | 0.06 pips |
| GBPJPY | 3.1 pips | 2.2 pips | 2.86 pips | 2.7 pips | 1.4 pips | 1.02 pips |
| Gold (XAUUSD) | 98 cents | 57 cents | 36 cents | 118 cents | 59 cents | 11 cents |
| Crude Oil | 0.15 cents | 0.13 cents | 0.04 cents | 0.14 cents | 0.13 cents | 0.027 cents |
| Apple | NA | 13 cents | 33 cents | NA | 2 cents | 24 cents |
| Tesla | NA | 32 cents | 51 cents | NA | 5 cents | 41 cents |
| Dow Jones 30 | 6 basis points | 7 basis points | 3.7 basis points | 6 basis points | 7 basis points | 2.25 basis points |
| Germany 40 | 4.2 basis points | 4.2 basis points | 2.7 basis points | 4.3 basis points | 4.2 basis points | 1.55 basis points |
| Bitcoin | $16.08 | $13.58 | $51.44 | $13.47 | $3.35 | $23.69 |
*These industry average values are derived from a pool of nearly 70 brokers that we tested. The numbers were last updated in January 2026.
Standard Account: My test revealed that Headway’s Standard account features low spreads on forex and stocks. The recorded BTCUSD spread, which fluctuated around $14, was especially tight, beating the benchmark more than 3 times.
At the same time, I recorded pretty high spreads on commodities and indices: the XAUUSD spread of $98 and crude oil spread of 0.15 cents far exceeded the industry benchmark, which may disappoint metals and energy traders.
I also noticed that Headway’s spreads tend to tighten around the New York market opening, making it a better time to stay active. I can therefore recommend the Standard account to day traders.
The Pro account offers generally lower spreads than the Standard account, except for XAUUSD. However, the Pro account also features a $3 commission, which raises the net cost. Overall, Headway’s Pro account falls short of other brokers’ Raw accounts, so I cannot recommend it to high-volume traders.
In addition to spreads and swaps, Headway charges commissions on its Pro account. Here is a breakdown of the applicable commission rates for selected instruments:
| Instrument | Asset Class | Commission* | Industry Average |
| EURUSD | Forex | $3 | $5.99 |
| Gold (XAUUSD) | Metals | $3 | $5.62 |
| Crude Oil | Energies | $0 | $2.74 |
| Apple | Stocks | $3 | $1.83 |
| Dow Jones 30 | Indices | $3 | $0.89 |
| Bitcoin | Cryptocurrencies | $25 | $2.29 |
*Round-turn per one full contract
Headway’s commissions start at $3 per 1 full-sized contract (100,000 units). The commission is round-trip, meaning you must pay $1.5 to open a position and $1.5 to close it later. Generally, Headway’s commission is lower than the industry average of $6. However, this is offset by the elevated spreads on the broker’s Pro account compared to other brokers’ raw-spread accounts.
Also, there is a massive $25 BTCUSD commission that far exceeds the industry average, making crypto trading on the Pro account less favorable than on the Standard account.
A swap fee is the cost of keeping a trade open overnight, and it’s tied to the difference in interest rates between the two currencies in a pair. If you’re holding a buy (long) position, you may either pay or earn interest depending on the rates—this is called a swap long. The same applies to a sell (short) position, where the overnight charge or credit is called a swap short.
The values listed below are for one full base currency contract (100,000 units).
| Instrument | Swap Long | Industry Average | Swap Short |
| EURUSD | Charge of $6.33 | $7.64 | Credit of $1.49 |
| GBPJPY | Credit of $6.2 | $7.74 | Charge of $41.2 |
| Gold (XAUUSD) | Charge of $41.8 | $65.65 | $0 |
| Crude Oil | Charge of $9.3 | $2.22 | Charge of $10.4 |
| Apple | $0 | $6.83 | $0 |
| Dow Jones 30 | Charge of $243.74 | $164.64 | Credit of $237.2 |
| Bitcoin | Charge of $22 | $4074.2 | Charge of $3 |
I recorded a $22 swap long on the BTCUSD, which is 183 times lower than the industry benchmark. Given its low Bitcoin spreads, Headway seems a great option for crypto traders, including those holding positions overnight. Swaps on forex pairs and gold also came in low, while the Apple swap was $0, making Headway a good option for stock swing traders.
However, I recorded a massive $243 overnight fee on Dow Jones 30, which exceeds the industry average by 1.5 times. The crude oil swap rate was also rather high.
Please note that swaps fluctuate over time, subject to changing interest rates.
To help you understand how much you’ll pay to trade each instrument, I calculated the cost of trade using the formula: spread rate x pip value + commission rate (swaps are not included).
| Instrument | Headway Standard Account | Industry Average | Headway Pro Account | Industry Average (Raw Accounts) |
| EURUSD | $9 | $11.97 | $11 | $6.62 |
| GBPJPY* | $17.28 | $18.31 | $16.12 | $12.73 |
| Gold (XAUUSD) | $77 | $36.56 | $91.5 | $17.00 |
| Crude Oil | $140 | $41.60 | $135 | $29.74 |
| Apple | $13 | $32.98 | $5 | $26.16 |
| Tesla | $32 | $51.22 | $8 | $43.24 |
| Dow Jones 30 | $65 | $37.57 | $68 | $23.64 |
| Germany 40* | $49.56 | $32.58 | $52.56 | $19.34 |
| Bitcoin | $14.83 | $51.44 | $33.41 | $25.98 |
*The base currency values are converted to US dollars.
Comparing Headway’s two accounts, I concluded that the Standard account offers better conditions for trading EURUSD, BTCUSD, gold, and indices (DAX 40 and DOW 30). In contrast, the Pro account is more favorable for stock trading (Apple and Tesla). It also provides slightly better conditions for trading GBPJPY and crude oil.
In conclusion, Headway’s conditions for trading BTCUSD (on its Standard account) and stocks (on both accounts) are far better than the industry average.
Headway offers the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms for desktop, web, and mobile trading. Both platforms feature fast order execution, copy trading, and automated trading via Expert Advisors (EAs). Headway has developed its own mobile app and offers a proprietary copy trading service from the client area. However, Headway does not offer any alternatives to MetaTrader for desktop and web trading.
| Platform/Tool | Suitable For |
| MetaTrader 4 (Web, desktop, mobile) | Easy order execution, basic technical analysis, automated trading, and trading on the go |
| MetaTrader 5 (Web, desktop, mobile) | Easy order execution, basic technical analysis, automated trading, and trading on the go |

Straightforward design. MetaTrader stands out for its simple layout. In fact, it pretty much set the benchmark for how a trading platform must be designed, given that so many newer trading stations have replicated MT’s layout.
Easily Customized. One of the greatest perks of MetaTrader is its adaptability. The platform accommodates different trading styles and serves users with different experience levels. Moreover, MT5 is packed with multiple tutorials to help you make the most of it.
Algo Trading Capabilities. For more experienced traders, MT5 offers a Depth of Market (DOM) tool and Expert Advisors (EAs) for algorithmic trading. The platform also features a strategy tester tool, helping algo traders perfect their systems.
Clunky Charts. On the downside, MT5’s chart visuals feel outdated and somewhat unpolished. They are clearly outmatched by the more modern and refined interfaces of platforms like cTrader and TradingView.
The MT5 platform by Headway is available for Windows and Mac users and supports 39 languages, including English, Spanish, German, Arabic, and Chinese.
MT5 features include:
MT5 is loaded with analytical tools, including:
That said, MT5’s charts get cluttered quite easily, especially when applying more than one technical indicator or drawing tool. Price action becomes obscured and difficult to interpret. Overall, MT5’s charts are not ideal for traders accustomed to streamlined and easily scalable setups.
MT5 offers three execution modes and covers all the core order types needed by most traders:
The MT5 mobile app is available on iOS and Android devices and offers most of the functionalities of the desktop version. This makes the MT5 app a convenient tool for staying connected to the market and adjusting your positions on the fly.
You can place market, limit, and stop orders, as well as manage position size and risk directly from the app. That said, the charting experience still feels a bit cramped, and price action can be hard to scale and analyze comfortably on a small screen.
Headway provides copy trading from the client area. If you are a signal follower, you can scan all available strategies and assess their performance based on net gain, running losses, win rate, trades executed, and more. Signal providers can market their strategies from the ‘Investor Area’, where they can set a preferred subscription fee. The broker itself does not charge a servicing fee for copy trading.
Headway operates on a hybrid STP/ECN model without a dealing desk. Client orders are either filled at the best available price from the broker’s pool of liquidity providers or they are matched electronically (buying-to-selling and selling-to-buying orders) via electronic communication networks.
I also noticed that Headway uses 5 separate servers, which are based in the UK (two), Germany, the US, and Indonesia. This gives you great latitude, allowing you to choose the fastest server based on your location.
For instance, I am based in Europe, and the system automatically connected me to the German server. With it, I recorded a 58.2 mscs ping, which almost matched the industry average of 60 milliseconds. Hence, I concluded that Headway will attract those who seek speedy order executions. However, keep in mind that your execution speed may differ depending on your location, internet speed, and other external factors.
Headway offers more than 400 tradable instruments. It outperforms other brokers in the number of indices and cryptocurrencies it offers, but its stock offering could be greater. Its forex and commodity selections meet the industry average. Headway also stands out with its 10 synthetic assets and rare indices, such as the Jakarta Stock Exchange index. Overall, the offering is pretty diverse and suitable for many strategies.

Headway provides 24/7 customer support via multiple channels: live chat, email, Telegram, Instagram Direct, Facebook, X, and Line. They use AI for translation, so you will get an answer in the language you turn to the broker. I had a positive experience with Headway’s support. Agents responded quickly, and their answers were decent and helpful. For more general questions, their comprehensive FAQ section is a great self-service tool.

When we test a broker’s customer support, we evaluate the agent’s knowledge of their own website, the time it takes them to respond to questions, and the level of detail in their answers.
I contacted Headway’s customer support via live chat on 23 February. Before being connected to a live agent, I provided my name and email address. I then asked about Headway’s headquarters, maximum gold leverage, and withdrawal fees for crypto payments. I waited less than 30 seconds for each response, and the answers were mostly clear and useful.
I also reached out via WhatsApp to ask about becoming a strategy provider for copy trading. The agent provided detailed instructions that were enough to get started.
However, I did encounter a slight discrepancy regarding the broker’s physical presence. The WhatsApp agent stated that Headway is based in South Africa, while the live chat agent clarified that although the company is registered in South Africa, it operates virtually with no physical office.
While the speed and quality of the instructions were top-notch, this minor inconsistency is something to keep in mind if the corporate location is a priority for you.
Headway accepts payments via credit and debit cards and cryptocurrencies, with no handling fee on deposits or withdrawals, though third-party processing fees may apply. Waiting times vary but are generally faster than with other brokers.
Note: I did not deposit/withdraw real capital with Headway for the purposes of this review.

Headway has two retail accounts: Standard (spread-based with no commissions) and Pro (raw spreads plus a $3 round-turn commission). You can get started with as little as $10 and choose from several base currencies. The account creation process is fast and easy, and I completed it in less than 10 minutes. Headway also offers a Cent account that allows beginners and algo traders to test their systems in a real-world trading environment.
To open an account with Headway, I followed these simple steps:
| Account Type | Standard | Pro | Cent |

The Standard account keeps things simple: just a $10 minimum deposit, floating spreads, and zero commissions. It’s a solid pick for casual traders who want straightforward pricing and a low barrier to entry.
The Pro account comes with tighter spreads and a $3 round-turn commission per lot. With a $100 minimum deposit, it’s still accessible, but better suited to more active and experienced traders.
Both accounts operate with a 30% margin call and a 0% stop-out level. That’s quite different from many brokers, which often set margin calls around 100% and stop-outs near 50%. A lower margin call alerts you earlier when your free margin is running thin, but a 0% stop-out means positions may stay open longer, increasing the risk of deeper drawdowns if the market moves sharply against you.
Headway also offers a Cent account, a great option for beginners who want to experience real-world trading without risking too much. Since its contract size is reduced to 10,000 units (down from the standard 100,000), your profits and losses will also be 10 times smaller than normal. This makes the Cent account also a great fit for algo traders, as they can use it to test their algorithms’ performance and tweak their parameters accordingly.
Headway offers demo accounts on MT4 and MT5 that let traders explore the platforms and test their strategies in a risk-free environment. Since markets are constantly changing, it’s crucial to keep your skills sharp without risking real money. You can open a demo account before or alongside your live CFD account.
Headway offers an Islamic account for swap-free trading. For further information, please contact Headway’s customer support.
Headway distinguishes itself by offering extremely lax leverage restrictions. You can apply unlimited leverage on your account, provided that you have traded at least 5 standard lots. Otherwise, Headway’s standard maximum leverage is 1:1000, which is still considered pretty high. For accounts with a balance below $5,000, Headway offers a maximum leverage of up to 1:2000.
Trading on margin with high leverage is extremely risky and may result in significant losses.
| Asset | Maximum Leverage |
| Currency Pairs | 1:Unlimited |
| Metals | 1:Unlimited |
| Energies | 1:200 |
| Stocks | 1:20 |
| Indices | 1:400 |

Headway does not accept traders from countries that were, are, or will be blacklisted by FATF, or any other country or jurisdiction where trading is prohibited by law.
Headway offers a basic economic calendar and publishes daily market briefs that help you track the most significant financial market developments. I liked this type of content for its straightforward and easily digestible format. However, Headway’s research offering lacks diversity. There are no video breakdowns, actionable trading signals, or any third-party content.
The Headway’s economic calendar informs traders of upcoming economic releases and financial news that could move the market and create viable trading opportunities.
The market insights are available from the ‘Forex news’ segment of the website, under the ‘Learn’ category. These help you stay in sync with the latest market-moving headlines and understand what, how, and why is driving the market.
For example, you can read about the Bank of England (BoE)’s latest monetary policy decision and how it is expected to influence the value of the cable (GBPUSD), or the impact of the latest inflation report in the U.S. on the value of the dollar.
Headway provides hundreds of educational articles and videos, as well as a comprehensive educational course covering technical and fundamental analysis and pattern recognition. Overall, I consider Headway’s education a good resource for learning for beginner and intermediate traders.
Headway has published over 180 articles covering various trading topics, from reading the economic calendar to assessing trading risk. You can find these materials under the ‘Education’ subcategory of the ‘Learn’ tab.
I especially liked the more unconventional articles, such as “Case Study: A Failed Trade in XAUUSD (December 2025)”. While most brokers focus on profit generation, with clickbait articles claiming to unveil the quickest path to forex riches, Headway is not afraid to acknowledge the more painful side of trading. What is more, Headway is one of the few brokers brave enough to show you how to learn from your mistakes – a crucial skill that will help you go a long way as a trader.
You can supplement your learning with Headway’s forex course for beginners, which covers matters related to technical and fundamental analysis and trading psychology. The course contains 5 quizzes so that you can test what you’ve learned after each lesson.
Founded in 2022 and headquartered in South Africa, Headway is a financial derivatives broker offering more than 400 assets across various markets. It is licensed and regulated by the FSCA, keeps client funds segregated, and guarantees negative balance protection.
Headway distinguishes itself with its crypto-friendly offering. It charges razor-sharp spreads and swaps on BTCUSD with Headway’s Standard account and supports free crypto payments.
I also recorded favorable conditions for trading forex pairs and stocks, though the broker’s indices and commodity costs were quite elevated.
Headway offers the MT4 and MT5 platforms, as well as its own mobile app and copy trading service. It also provides comprehensive educational content, unrestricted leverage, and enhanced copy trading services. However, its customer support appeared unreliable during my test.
In conclusion, I find Headway to be a great choice for crypto traders, high-leverage traders, and traders interested in copy trading.
